Is your “self-care routine” just burnout with better branding?

 You use PTO to finally get some much needed self care. You plan based on recommendations from friends, influencers & your Aunt who went to the most amazing spa ever. 

But you come back wondering why you feel even worse. We hate to tell you, you’re suffering from recovery mismatch.

We have done it all… meditation, take a bath, rest. All amazing advice, for some, but terrible for others. The problem with the self care advice out there right now is it assumes everyone recharges the same way.

Somewhere along the way, time to recharge turned into doing what worked for a yoga influencer on a Tuesday. You realize your self-care routine is just socially acceptable burnout, in a matching athleisure set.

The typical advice out there negates that everyone has a different energy style & recharging for one will completely drain another. 

For sustained energy: 37% of the population
You were told: Sit still, meditate, slow down.

That will drain you because your energy is meant to move. Forcing stillness too early feels like putting a lid on a boiling pot.

What actually works for you: Movement, walking, lifting, dancing, even rage-cleaning your house like it owes you money.

You don’t relax your way into energy, you use up all your energy to calm.

Give yourself permission to engage in what excites you, not just disengage.

 

For scattered energy: 33% of the population
You were told: Stick to a routine, slow mornings, gentle consistency.

That will drain you because repetition drains you faster than overwork does.

What actually works: Variety, hiking one day, spinning the next, random creative burst at 10pm.

Your nervous system resets through novelty, not discipline.

Give yourself permission to do what you want, when you want. You don’t need rest, you need freedom to pivot without judgment.

 

For advisor energy: 19% of the population
You were told: Push through, stay active, get energized.

That will drain you because you’re already running on borrowed energy.

What actually works: Deep rest & low-stimulation environments, reading, nature walks, intentional solitude, actual naps, not doom scrolling.

Your power comes back when you stop performing.

You don’t need a break, Give yourself permission to seek sustainable recognition & have strong energy boundaries.

 

For initiator energy: 9% of the population
You were told: Group classes, community healing, talk it out.

That will drain you because too much input will irritate you. 

What actually works: Solo, self-directed resets, long drives, music, creating something alone, disappearing for a bit.

You don’t decompress by sharing energy, you reset by reclaiming control of it.

You don’t need time off, you need autonomy. Give yourself permission to take alone time.

 

For reflective energy: 1% of the population
You were told: Build a routine, stay grounded, be consistent.

This will drain you because you’re deeply impacted by what’s around you. 

What actually works: Environmental shifts, new spaces, travel, different social settings, even rearranging a room.

You don’t fix your energy internally first, you change the environment that’s shaping it.

You don’t just need PTO. Give yourself permission to change your environment to reset your system.

 

If you are finally realizing your self-care routine isn’t recovery, it’s just burnout with a skincare step, it’s not you. It’s the advice you’re listening to. You need to self care for the way you were built, not what everyone tells you to do.
